Top 10 most cited scientific articles from Denmark 2012-2021

Bibliometrics — The University Post has extracted the most cited articles by scientists associated with Danish universities from a key citation database, and covering the years 2012-2021.

At the end of 2021 we extracted a top 1o all-time list of most cited articles from scientists affiliated with Danish universities.

It is time to take another dip into the numbers. This time, however, we look at articles that have a more recent citation impact.

The list below shows the most cited articles over the last 10 years (2012-2021), by scientists who at the time of publishing were associated with a Danish university. The list has been extracted from the Scopus database on 12 December 2022.

Using citation databases as a measure of the ‘impact’ of a scientific paper is problematic for a number of reasons.

What did we do

Our list extracted data from the Scopus database’s analytical tool SciVal.

We filtered for ‘Publications in Denmark‘ in the date range ‘2012 to 2021‘ using the ASJC (All Science Journal Classification scheme) in ‘all subject areas‘. Our list includes ‘All publication types‘.

Thanks to Thea Marie Drachen, research librarian at the Library of the University of Southern Denmark, for her assistance in navigating SciVal.

High citation numbers tend to go to disciplines with traditions for producing articles with multiple co-authorships, like in the natural sciences. Disciplines with traditions for single-author works, and book-length studies and monographs — like in the social sciences and humanities — tend to have lower citation numbers.

A citation is normally, but not necessarily, good. It might be a negative citation disproving the claims of an article.

Also, the humanities and social sciences are simply not covered adequately by the databases. A 2018 analysis by Scopus showed wide discrepancies between the coverage of the different disciplines. According to Scopus’ own numbers, 80.17 per cent of articles within the field of Biochemistry, Genetics and Molecular Biology are covered in the database, but only a miniscule 20.75 per cent of the Art and Humanities corpus are covered.

But a top list can help to highlight topics of research with international impact within institutions that otherwise remain unrecognized by the general public and that go unreported in the media.

So this is why we have chosen to release a ranked list of cited publications from Danish universities anyway. It is limited, it is skewed, and should be taken with a pinch of salt. That said – here it is.
